Our Story

It all started when…

Skyview Church of the Nazarene merged two smaller congregations: New Life Fellowship and North Hill Church of the Nazarene. These congregations shared a common vision to reach people living in the northern suburbs of Calgary with the life transforming message of Jesus Christ. New Life was planted in 1989 by Bryan Roller with a plan to reach the unchurched. The church gathered in several rental spaces for more than twenty years including a commercial office space, a school gymnasium, a community centre, and a college chapel. The desire to become established within a neighbourhood led to the consideration of a merger with North Hill Church of the Nazarene. North Hill was established in 1952 and as the neighborhood and church aged, a desire to reach younger families motivated the people of North Hill to take a significant step of faith. Under the leadership of Roland Feltmate, the aging church building was sold, and a parcel of land was purchased in the up-and-coming Northern Hills community. North Hill’s vision required significant sacrifice and faith from those who called North Hill home. Their vision to reach young families paved the way for the construction of the building we now call home. North Hill and New Life came together with a shared mission to reach people with the message and hope of Jesus Christ. This is our shared heritage as a church.

In September of 2009 Pastor Stuart was called to serve as the senior pastor of Skyview following a difficult season in the life of the church. Stuart along with his wife Ruthanne and three young children moved from the Toronto area where he had served as a youth pastor and district youth director for eight years. The land that was acquired by North Hill had been left undeveloped for several years. As the Skyview leadership considered the future of the church, the decision to build on the land was made in 2015. After three years of planning, raising funds, and building design, the facility we now call home was constructed. We held our first church service in our new church facility on Sunday, October 14, 2018.

Skyview has grown significantly in the years following construction. Today our church comprises of over twenty ethnic groups and every age. Our future as a church is bright because of the vision and faithfulness of those who have gone before us. As we look ahead, we do so in the same faith-filled spirit of our pioneers; we long to see many more people come to know and experience the life-transforming grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the city we love.
